Technical standards determine whether systems interoperate, whether privacy and security requirements travel across borders, and whether smaller countries have to pick one closed stack from one great power.
The Innovation Party should support U.S. participation in standards bodies, but not as a vehicle for forcing U.S. platforms everywhere. Security screening exists to target specific threats: espionage recruitment, sanctions evasion, export-control diversion, and dual-use technology transfer, not to treat every collaboration as suspect by default. Treating all openness as vulnerability gives away one of the United States' core advantages: people want to build, study, publish, and collaborate in open systems. The policy should defend that advantage while controlling those specific risks.
