Space Exploration and Innovation: Public Science, Commercial Services, Usable Orbits

The two major parties broadly agree that space matters, which is worth saying plainly instead of manufacturing a partisan fight. The 2024 Republican platform calls for near-Earth manufacturing, Americans returning to the Moon and going onward to Mars, and stronger partnerships with commercial space companies. The 2024 Democratic platform says Democrats will keep supporting NASA, the International Space Station, the return to the Moon, Mars, and scientific discovery. The public difference is more emphasis than direction: Republicans more openly foreground commercial development and national competition; Democrats place NASA inside research, manufacturing, and scientific-discovery language.

The Innovation Party's delta is not "we like space too." It is the operational test neither platform states: human exploration, public science, commercial procurement, traffic coordination, debris mitigation, and international norms must be funded and governed as one system. A budget that funds Artemis by halving science fails that test. A commercial-first procurement that creates vendor lock-in fails that test. A launch-friendly regulatory policy that does not keep orbit usable fails that test.

The Libertarian Party does not appear to have a detailed national space plank comparable to the two major parties' short platform language. Libertarian reasoning would predictably favor commercial enterprise and skepticism toward large federal programs; this issue agrees on the commercial-service opportunity but rejects the idea that orbital debris, planetary defense, space traffic coordination, and open scientific data can be left to private ordering alone.
